Do You Really Need a Body Butter? The Answer May Surprise You

Do you really need a body butter?

When it comes to skincare, you might probably already have a solid skincare routine for your face, but what about the other parts of your body? Keeping your skin healthy should not stop there, in fact the skin on the face and neck only accounts to about 9% of your total body surface area

That said, as important as your face care regimen is, the skin on your body deserves just as much love and care.

There are a few things you can use to maintain your skin’s integrity and elasticity, but not many know about the wonders of a good moisturizing body butter. But what exactly is it?

What is body butter?

A body butter is an oil-based moisturizer that has a thick creamy consistency much like the one we put on our daily bread.

It gets its consistency from a combination of essential butters and carrier oils which help to keep moisture locked in the skin while it provides important vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids that are much needed by the skin.

What are body butters made of?

The most common butters used are made of natural ingredients such as cocoa, shea, palm, and mango.

Body butter vs. lotion

Both products are great at ensuring your skin gets the moisture it needs, but with a few differences.

Body butter is thicker because it is made with butters and oils. It allows more moisture to be kept under the skin to prevent drying or cracking.

Lotion, on the other hand, has a thinner, more liquid-y consistency because of the presence of water. Its lightweight consistency allows it to penetrate through the skin more easily.

Because it’s thicker, body butter can be applied in lesser frequency throughout the day than lotion since it has a longer staying power.

Is Body Butter Better?

Body butter is recommended for use during colder weather where there is less humidity to keep the skin from cracking, especially on the elbows, hands, legs, and feet.

Lotions are best used during hot weather since it is much lighter and less greasy and recommended to be used on the arms, stomach, and thighs.

Body butter offers more moisturizing benefits than lotion and for a longer period of time. And while body butters do tend to be heavier than lotion, it can be formulated in a way that it still gives you the same benefits without getting a greasy feeling when applied.

Whether you choose to use a lotion, cream, or body butter depends on the condition of your skin.

Thinner, lightweight lotions are perfect if you just want to moisturize your skin a little bit or during summer or spring when the air is humid. You may need to apply lotions a few times during the day as it’s not formulated to stay on for long.

Body butters provide moisture and protection from dehydration during cold, arid seasons because of the oil and fatty acid content. It can be applied early during the day without needing to reapply as often as you would with lotion. It’s great for use before bed as well to help keep skin soft while you sleep.

Body Butter Benefits

Some people may think that body butter is just another unnecessary product for the skin, but they can’t be any more mistaken because the benefits it can give makes this more than just a tub of fatty cream.

Keeps skin thoroughly moisturized and soft

The rich fatty acids in body butter helps lock in moisture to the skin giving it a nice plump texture.

Prevents the skin from flaking and peeling

If you often wash or bathe in hot water, you may notice your skin getting dry and flaky which can be caused by moisture loss. Using body butter right after bathing helps ensure you have enough moisture in your skin to keep it from flaking or peeling.

May help with skin aging

There have been claims that it may help smooth out fine lines and wrinkles on the skin, possibly because of its excellent ability to moisturize the skin.

Helps soothe itchiness

Itchy skin is usually a result of having dry skin. Putting on a bit of body butter to dry itchy skin can help soothe and minimize the sensation. Because it is an anti-inflammatory ingredient, cocoa butter and shea butter provide the benefits of calming the skin with the addition of adding moisture, so it gives some relief to the itching.

Eases sunburned skin

As much as we want to tell you to keep your sun exposure to a minimum, we have to admit that activities during summer and attending all-day events and concerts are just too good to miss. Even with sunscreen, there’s still a high risk of getting a sunburn.

The anti-inflammatory attribute in body butter can help calm redness and irritation and soothe the stinging feeling in your skin. Just put some on your skin after a nice cool bath to give you a refreshing feel.

Softens cracked or tough skin

Body butter melts in warm temperatures, which means it takes an oil-form to quickly and effectively be absorbed by the skin. Its consistency provides it with a long staying power when applied and provides better moisture retention especially during dry or cold months.

Protects the skin from damage

Moisturizing with body butter helps keep your skin in tip top condition increasing your skin’s protective barrier against harsh elements and pollution which can age and damage the skin.

Body butter can help improve collagen production on the skin with the help of vitamins and fatty acids in shea or cocoa butter.

Is body butter safe for me?

The main ingredients used in body butter are safe for use for any skin type. In fact, some people would use body butter to reduce the itchiness caused by skin allergies and insect bites.

Shea butter, one of the most commonly used ingredients, has been accounted for as a low-risk tropical ingredient,  meaning there’s a rare chance of an allergic reaction when used.

There may be people who are sensitive to cocoa butter, but that is also an unusual occurrence.

You may want to do a patch test on your skin if you are sensitive to some ingredients before using body butter for your entire body, but in general, body butter should not be a cause for concern.
